Summerlee - Bringing our industrial history to life
The Scottish Museum of Industrial Life reopened on the site of the former Hydrocon Crane company at Sumerlee on 26th September 2008, following a major £10 million redevelopment.
The new exhibition hall now provides a modern and environmentally sustainable setting for some of Scotland's most important displays of social and industrial history, including a large collection of working machinery. Moving from the pre-historical period to rise of industrial Scotland, Summerlee charts Lanarkshire's rise to importance and massive contribution to Scottish - and world - engineering.
Funding for the redevelopment has come from a number of sources, including nearly £5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and contributions from the Scottish Museums Council, the European Regional Development Fund, North Lanarkshire Council and a number of charitable trusts and private individuals.
To celebrate the museum’s renewal for the 21st Century, Reigart (already a patron of Summerlee) committed £70,000 sponsorship over a 10-year period towards the maintenance and running of “The Reigart Suite” which hosts educational events and seminars.
Sumerlee is a fascinating and dynamic museum which has justifiably been awarded a Visit Scotland 4-Star rating. For further details about the museum log onto www.visitlanarkshire.com/summerlee
