Glasgow Youth Hostel Roof Protection

Park Terrace: Facade of damaged youth hostel
Emergency
Glasgow Youth Hostel Roof Protection
Park Terrace, Glasgow
March 2003

Background:

A major roof top fire in Glasgow’s ‘A’ listed Scottish Youth Hostel building required an emergency response to protect its Victorian structure, remove fire debris and weatherproof the entire roof area to prevent further damage and facilitate future reinstatement works.

CHALLENGES:

With access to the building, which is surrounded by prime quality office space, only available via its front door, the protection of internal areas with a temporary weatherproof roof installation was crucial. The Scottish Youth Hostel’s exposed, hilltop position facing South West meant a fully engineered solution was required.

SOLUTIONS:

Following the demolition of a dangerous chimney and fire debris removal, waterproof sheeting was used to limit further water damage pending completion of a temporary roof installation. The entire building having been cocooned with a weatherproof membrane allowed workers to proceed unrestricted with restoration work on the roof and in other areas in a totally protected environment.
