Background:

Processing thousands of tons of substructure derived from a 3.5m layer of fused slag and other waste was just part of the job when Reigart demolished RB Tennent’s old complex of factories and foundries in preparation for a new retail park at Coatbridge.

CHALLENGES:

Huge quantities of waste awaited removal from below the surface once the relatively straightforward above-ground structures had been dealt with. Given its location, the RB Tennent project also involved devising careful strategies to minimise its impact on the local community.

SOLUTIONS:

Reigart carried out mass excavations over the entire site to establish the extent of concrete structures and buried furnace slag, deposited into the site by virtue of its historic use.

As a result of the investigations a full scale crushing and screening operation was established to process the huge volumes of extracted materials for re-use on site prior to follow-on construction works.

12 months of intensive work saw RB Tennent’s former Coatbridge site fully cleared and the site is now occupied by a major DIY and garden centre retailer.
