Toryglen Housing Demolition
Background:
Reigart’s demolition of some 50 tenement closes on Glasgow’s Toryglen housing estate was a key component of an important regeneration project for the area.
CHALLENGES:
The fact that the tenements were located very close to other homes occupied by existing residents had major implications for the way the project was approached.
SOLUTIONS:
With an eye firmly on safety, Reigart began by devising and implementing a traffic management system to allow safe access for vehicles and pedestrians in and around the demolition area. Some of the structures were made of concrete cast in situ and consequently were very strong. So a technique of systematic racking (pulling down) and support scaffolding was used to avoid destabilising other weaker sections.
In order to prevent damage to neighbouring structures and ensure resident’s safety, hand reduction techniques were used when buildings were in close proximity to occupied areas. The overall project was finished with a landscaping scheme.
