Strathclyde University
Background:
An electrical fault led to a fire which completely destroyed the Sports Science building on the Jordanhill Campus of Strathclyde University. Immediate removal of hazardous waste was imperative as exams were scheduled to take place in nearby buildings
Challenges:
- Short timescale to avoid disruption to exams
- Hazardous waste including blood and sulphuric acid from a research laboratory
- Asbestos presence
- Demolition within a fully functioning university campus
Solutions:
Reigart worked over the Christmas period to ensure no disruption to exams. Hand demolition of the area around a common access route enabled speedy reconstruction works to the adjacent building to allow reoccupation.
We were then able to manually deconstruct the remainder of the building to a ground level. The walls of the basement were retained at the University's's request and access ramps created. Ducts below the site were cleaned and made safe and the site was prepared to receive temporary accommodation to allow the University to resume operations with the minimum of delay.
