Background:

The removal of asbestos from a former primary school and janitor’s house to be followed by its demolition and site levelling.

Challenges:

  • The hillside location of the school meant the area was currently unsuitable for a new social housing project
  • The site required substantial re-grading and levelling before any building works could commence.

Solutions:

This project drew on many of the skills of Reigart's multi-disciplinary team.

  1. Asbestos was safely removed from the buildings in accordance with Asbestos Regulations 2006.
  2. Former school demolished using excavators.
  3. Debris was sorted for recycling.
  4. On-site crushing to recycle the demolition material into engineering grade aggregates for the follow-on groundworks.
  5. Excavation and stockpiling of approximately 5000 m3 of top soil.
  6. Cut and fill of over 15,000 m3 of sub soils and clays to create the new site profile.
  7. Supply of onsite engineer to take measurements and site levels.
  8. GPS Plotting and marking of housing plots and roads for the follow on development.
  9. Commissioning of topographical surveys to chart and record progress.
  10. Supply and compacting of additional recycled 6F2 crush material as a sub-base for the road.
  11. Diversion of existing field drains to keep the site free from surface water.

The project was completed on time and the site was left in an excellent condition for the housebuilders to begin construction.
