Aulds Bakery
Background:
A ferocious fire in the manufacturing area at Aulds Bakery reduced the building to a twisted mass of metal and fire debris. Demolition and groundworks works had to be completed as expeditiously as possible to enable the client to resume production.
Challenges:
- Presence of large quantities of contaminated foodstuffs requiring removal and disposal
- Initial operations had to be carried out in close liaison with forensic teams
- Necessary to ensure disconnection of services from the demolition area
- Time constraints imposed by the client’s urgent need to recommence production.
Solutions:
Careful liaison with forensic teams was required before the structures could be removed. Groundworks needed to be carried out to facilitate the installation of temporary production facilities.
- Reigart deployed Liebherr 3600 excavators fitted with rotating shears to cut down and dismantle sections of the distorted steel structure and metal cladding to permit a safe progressive advance into the various areas requiring forensic inspection.
- Upon completion of the forensic investigation the full demolition of the manufacturing facility was undertaken, separating and retaining the front office section of the building for potential re-use.
- The demolition was carried out leaving the structural floor slab in place for further assessment.
- A groundwork package for the provision of drainage and an engineered platform was instructed to facilitate the erection of a temporary production facility by a specialist Dutch manufacturer.
A deftly executed emergency demolition and accompanying groundworks meant that production could be resumed within 9 weeks of the date of the fire.
