Background:

This contract involved the demolition of three, two-storey hospital-ward blocks and four, single-storey ancillary buildings within an active hospital next to A&E department, ICU and day surgery departments.

Challenges:

  • Major demolition works to take place within an active hospital
  • Five hand separations from main hospital utilising full height scaffolding
  • Adjacent to A&E department, ICU and day surgery departments.

Solutions:

This project demanded the careful coordination of multiple demolition and monitoring teams.

  1. Separation Points - Design, supply, erect and terracotta profile wall sheeting including cladding, capping and flashings to finish disconnection points and infilled openings.
  2. Ventilation Equipment - Design, supply, erect and maintain, filters for existing ventilation system, to minimise dust entering ventilation system.
  3. Vibration Monitoring - Provision of vibration monitoring within ICU department to ensure that vibration levels did not affect eye surgery.
  4. Traffic Management - Provision of traffic management system to minimise disruption to hospital traffic and car parks including A&E route.
  5. Roof Edge Protection - Supply and erect of roof edge protection to allow safe slate removal.

The project was completed safely and efficiently with no complaints about dust or noise. Indeed it was noted that the noise levels from the demolition experienced within the hospital were less than "a door shutting, or a bed rolling along the corridor".
