ABC Cinema

Background:

The ABC Cinema in Muirend, Glasgow had an A-listed, Spanish-American style, Art-Deco façade. We were asked to demolish the cinema while retaining the facade so that the building could be converted into attractive modern apartments.

Challenges:

• Retain A-listed façade
• High levels of asbestos present
• Busy traffic on two sides 
• Adjacent to operational superstore and residential properties
• Demolition works had to be integrated with internal reconstruction.

Solutions:

Liasing closely with the construction company, our in-house design team came up with and innovative support system that could be integrated into the construction of the new apartment building.

1. Reigart installed a steel framework to support the facade and other elements of the building that were to be retained.
2. The remainder of the building was then demolished.
3. Following completion of the demolition works the steel work was left in place to form the permanent structural support for the new construction.

The retained facade preserves the character and history of the area for future generations.
