Background:

The unexpected subsidence of old mine workings left the end of the terrace uninhabitable and structurally unsafe, necessitating its emergency demolition.

Challenges:

  • Unexpected subsidence in a terrace property
  • Need to protect remaining properties
  • Residents evacuated into temporary accommodation.

Solutions:

The unsafe part of the terrace needed to be removed to protect the remaining dwellings. The project needed to be implemented swiftly to prevent further damage to the terrace and we therefore set in motion the following programme of works:

  • The buildings were hand separated using precision cutters
  • The damaged end of the terrace was safely deconstructed using excavators
  • A new insulated gable wall was built where the property had been separated and the roof was repaired
  • New drainage was put in and the area re-landscaped as a community greenspace.

The project was promptly implemented and executed with a minimum of disruption to the local community.
